What does a liver function test measure?
One number doesn't tell you how your liver is doing. This blood test gives you three answers.
Is your liver working harder than it should?

Does your bile drain well?
bile on its way to your gutYour liver makes bile and sends it on to your gut. When that falters, gamma-GT, alkaline phosphatase and bilirubin rise. Gamma-GT also goes up with alcohol.
Does your liver make enough?
Your liver makes albumin, the protein your blood holds the most of. It only falls once your liver has made less for a long time.

When are your liver values too high?
Labs call your ALT too high above 45 to 50 U/L for men and above 34 to 35 for women. The American gastroenterologists' guideline puts a healthy ALT lower: up to 33 and up to 25.

Grey zoneEvery lab calls this normal, but it sits above what the guideline calls healthy. A higher ALT goes with fat in the liver, excess weight and alcohol, among other things.
