01 What you find out

What does a vitamin D test measure?

One value: your vitamin D, the store in your blood. It gives you three answers.

  1. Are you low?

Your blood shows how much vitamin D you've made and taken in over the past few weeks. That's your store.

  2. Is it the winter?

From October to March the sun is too low here: your skin makes almost no vitamin D. Your store is at its lowest in March.

  3. Is your supplement working?

If you take vitamin D, a few months on you see whether your value is back. Taking more than you need adds nothing.

02 Reading your value

When is your vitamin D too low?

One lab calls your vitamin D too low under 30, the others already under 50. The Dutch Health Council calls under 30 a deficiency.

40 nmol/L

Grey zone

One lab calls this normal, another too low. You're often here at the end of the winter.

For adults up to 70; from 70 the Health Council puts the line at 50. An example, not a diagnosis.
