What is the difference between HbA1c and fasting blood sugar?

Your fasting blood sugar is your sugar at the moment of the draw. Your HbA1c shows how high it was on average over the past two to three months. Together they say more than either does alone.

Your blood sugar is higher than normal, but not yet so high that it counts as diabetes. For HbA1c that's roughly between 42 and 48 mmol/mol. That's exactly when food and exercise can often still change a lot.

What if my HbA1c is too high?

From 48 mmol/mol the WHO speaks of diabetes. Discuss your results with your GP, who confirms it with a second test. Optimize does not diagnose or treat.
