01 What you find out

What does a vitamin B12 test measure?

One number doesn't tell you whether you have enough B12. This blood test gives you three answers.

  1. Do you have enough B12?

Your body can use only part of your B12. The rest is bound to a protein that doesn't hand it to your cells.

  2. Does it reach your cells?

If your cells are short of B12, methylmalonic acid builds up in your blood. It rises only with a B12 deficiency.

  3. Or is it your folate?

A shortage of B12 and of folate gives the same blood picture: larger red blood cells. That's why this test measures both.

02 Reading your value

When is your B12 too low?

Labs call your B12 too low under 133 to 175. Yet up to about 250 your cells can already run short; there, methylmalonic acid decides.

200 pmol/L

Grey zone

Every lab calls this normal, but your cells can already run short. Your methylmalonic acid settles it.

For adults. An example, not a diagnosis.
